SOWGF was founded for the purpose of assisting wounded, ill, and injured Special Operations Warriors transition from their military service to civilian life. This assistance includes helping the warriors find access to continued treatment and therapy for mental and physical health issues they incurred while in the service of their country and helping them in their career transition by providing members from the civilian business sector to serve as mentors. The transition assistance is provided using a retreat format utilizing the game of golf as the core activity.
Why specifically focus on the Special Operations Community? The Special Operations Force is the most engaged force we have and experiences the highest percentage of wounded, ill, and injured personnel. In today’s military, our SOF Warriors have more direct combat exposure and are most often chosen for the most demanding missions.
When leaving the military these warriors may have physical and/or mental health issues, but they also leave with unique skill sets, more education and training, often some foreign language capability, and an incredible resiliency resulting from having to perform under extreme pressure. It is our goal to provide these warriors with the opportunity to serve in the civilian sector with the same passion they exhibited while defending our country.
Why Golf? The game of golf is a highly rated adaptive sport. It is a life-long game that can be played in most cases regardless of injuries and debilitations. It is a sport where you can adapt your game to the conditions of your life. More specifically, the focus and concentration required to play aids SOF Warriors dealing with Traumatic Brain Injury and PTSD recovery. The networking and social aspects of the game paired with the outdoor natural environment in which it is played can also have a very positive impact, both emotionally and spiritually. It is a game that uniquely fits with our recovering and transitioning warriors and provides a great environment for our warriors and mentors to bond.
